He is also the conductor of the New Horizons Symphony – a local group of amateur and professional musicians – and the NMSU Philharmonic. LCSO’s principal violist and associate professor in the NMSU Music Department Jorge Martinez-Rios serves as the conductor of the youth orchestra. Luke said 28 high school string players made up the first youth ensemble, however there are plans to expand the program to include wind and percussion musicians next season. “For me, the connections between the community and building those bridges all around is very important.”
And because of our close connection with NMSU it’s just like a perfect time,” Luke said. “Many, many orchestras have youth orchestras and you can have their members coach the youth orchestra. Previously, students would have to audition for the El Paso Symphony Youth Orchestra if they wanted to take part in such a program. Luke explained that the new ensemble complimented his goal of more community outreach by the symphony. LCSO announced in 2022 that it was establishing its first youth orchestra in spring 2023. Debuting the Las Cruces Symphony Youth Orchestra The 2022-2023 season was the first with new conductor Ming Luke who took over following the retirement of longtime conductor Lonnie Klein. The ensemble performed its final concerts Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7 at the Atkinson Recital Hall. The roughly 70-member professional ensemble performs several classical and POPS concerts throughout the season, coordinated with the New Mexico State University academic calendar. LCSO has been part of the southern New Mexico community in various forms for over 60 years.
